Skylark of Space Review

Skylark of Space by E. E. Doc SmithSkylark of Space review by David Edwards

This is an interesting novel containing some plot twists and other fun stuff.  The main characters are Seaton, Crane and Duquesne.  Well Seaton is a brainy scientist who stumbles upon material X while running some tests from military grade platinum.  Crane his best friend and extremely rich playboy has lots of money and is an engineer to boot. Duquesne is another cutthroat scientist who finds out about material X will will do anything to get it.

Enter the love interest.  Yes from this backwards time women stereotyping is rampant mind you the author makes his women a little odd.   The skylark of Space was originally written in 1928 when technology was starting to play a more important role in everyday life.  What works well is the way the characters take information that every day reader would have no clue about and make it seem fantastic.

The characters are fun and a little card board but held up by the pacing and action.  This is where you can see the space opera's coming from.  The imagination used is a little campy but hey it still holds up for a fun read.  Try it.
