William Schoell
William Schoell is an American author, born November 30, 1951 in
Manhattan and educated in Vermont. He earned a B.A Castleton State College in
1973 and has written several horror and science fiction novels, such as Late at
Night (1986) and Saurian (1988). He was the author of "Hidden Horrors," a column
in the now defunct horror magazine The Scream Factory, as well as a contributor
of articles and reviews to periodicals including Writer, Writer's Digest, Paris
Notes, Off Duty, and BBC Music.
More recently, he has published books that deal with film, and biographies,
some of which were written together with Hollywood biographer Lawrence J. Quirk.
His play Joe and Janice premiered at the American Theater of Actors in 2000. He
is also the editor and publisher of High and Low, an online entertainment
newsletter.
At one time he served as associate editor of Quirk's Reviews, and editor of
the Macabre Newsletter. He is widely renowned as a film historian and biographer
of such fantasy and sci-fi greats as Steven Spielberg, Jules Verne, and
H.P. Lovecraft, in addition to film stars and personalities of yesterday and
today.
William Schoell once noted: "I write because it is a joy to do so, and I have
never been interested in doing anything else. At the beginning of my career I
wrote horror and suspense novels because I loved the genre and it was then
enjoying unprecedented popularity. (It is unfortunate that publishers often gave
my novels such stupid and often inappropriate titles as Spawn of Hell and
Bride of Satan.)
